Treatment

Treatments for rhythm disorders can be broadly classified into the following categories:

1. No treatment when arrhythmias (irregular rhythms) are minor or nonexistent or symptoms are minor. This would include isolated PACs and PVCs.

2. Addition of or change in medication.

3.Implantation of a permanent pacemaker or ICD (implantable cardiac defibrillator) to correct a known condition or implantation of an implantable cardiac monitor in an attempt to capture data to help with a diagnosis.

4. Use of an invasive procedure to correct a mechanical problem with blood flow (this could be either an angioplasty and stent or a bypass).

5. Use of an invasive procedure to correct an electrical problem causing rapid and irregular rates (generally an ablation).
