Sudden
Cardiac Death (SCD) or 'cardiac arrest' claims the lives of about
400,000 Americans every year! More than 2,550 died of
cardiovascular disease each day of
2005!
That is around 1 death
every 33 seconds.
You may be at elevated risk if you
have had;
- Palpitations
- A
family history
- Fainting spells
- A heart attack
Other known contributing factors;
- Stress
- High blood
pressure
- Cholesterol
- Diabetes
- Heredity, age &
sex
- Physical
Inactivity
- Overweight,
obesity
Now, Cardiac Arrest Screening can
determine your risk of SCD. The test is simple, quick, inexpensive
and accurate. After learning of your risk you can take action to
correct your risk before it is too late.
Sudden death from cardiac arrest is
a major health problem that receives much less publicity than
heart attack. Sudden death (also called sudden cardiac death)
occurs when the heart stops abruptly (cardiac arrest). Death can
occur within minutes after the victim collapses. Most cases of
cardiac arrest that lead to sudden death occur when the heart's
electrical impulses become rapid (ventricular tachycardia) and
then chaotic (ventricular fibrillation). This irregular heart
rhythm causes the heart to suddenly stop pumping blood.
Most known heart diseases can lead
to cardiac arrest and sudden death. The most common underlying
cause is coronary heart disease, which includes heart attack.
The American heart Association
offers the following statistics:
61,800,000 Americans have one or
more types of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Of these, 29,700,000
are male and 32,100,000 are female. 24,750,000 are estimated to be
age 65 and older.
- High blood
pressure - 50,000,000
- Coronary heart
disease - 12,600,000
- Stroke -
4,600,000
- Congenital heart
failure - 1,000,000
- Congestive heart
failure - 4,790,000
- 1 in 5 males and
females has some form of cardiovascular disease.
- 1 of every 2.5
deaths will be from cardiovascular disease.
- Estimated
565,000 new coronary attacks will occur this year, 300,000
recurrent attacks as well 1 in 4 have high blood pressure.
- 1 in 4 adults
have high blood pressure
- CVD is the
Number 3 killer of children less than 15 years of age.
- Coronary Heart
Disease accounts for 1 out of every 5 deaths in women.
